The Labour leader is confronting backbench anger following government officials abandoned plans to give workers immediate safeguards against unfair dismissal, a U-turn that breaches the party's election pledges.
Parliamentarians such as a former minister who led the worker protection legislation raised objections regarding the retreat declared by ministers.
Ministers have axed the proposal to eliminate the two-year waiting requirement for workers to make an unfair dismissal claim and allow them to do so beginning day one in a new job, to try to get the legislation through parliament.
The legislation became trapped in a confrontation among upper and lower chambers regarding the initial proposal to offer labor protections from the start, including proposals to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.
The government now intends to implement the entitlement regarding wrongful termination post six-month work period rather, although additional first-day entitlements to parental leave and illness compensation continue planned to proceed, becoming active in the second quarter of 2026.
The elected official for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East described the move as a "complete betrayal" and vowed to push for its reversal.
"We cannot support that partial approach."
"This represents misguided policy and I intend to advocate to reverse this让æ¥."
Another Labour MP shared concern regarding insufficient discussion, stating: "There has been zero consultation with parliamentary colleagues. The Lords don't have primacy regarding election promises, so why have we capitulated??"
An additional lawmaker stated: "Employers have nothing to fear about immediate protections, however laborers face significant risks from companies who doesn't want day-one rights."
The previous work and pensions official confirmed that the decision "undoubtedly constitutes a pledge violation."
The education secretary stated remained a "substantial likelihood" the enactment of the worker protection legislation might have faced postponement had the administration not implemented a U-turn over day one protections against wrongful termination.
"Consultation has occurred regarding the issue of unfair dismissal and the qualifying timeframe with employers, the TUC and government, and subsequent to that dialogue there's been agreement concerning future direction, that demonstrates progress."
She emphasized that "Consequently the eligibility timeframe will decrease from two years to six months, and this accompanies important day-one rights around sick pay and around parental leave."
"However the danger present without forward movement, those significant entitlements could remain inactive from April next year."
Upon being asked regarding whether it represented an unfulfilled pledge, the secretary answered: "Within the election platform, the promise indicated was that we intended to collaborate with trade unions, with employers, with public organizations, in consulting on such entitlements we intended to implement."
"Consequently, dual elements remain to that, throughout the campaign document, the significant entitlements and the discussion process."
